Physical Education

Our Physical Education curriculum broadens all students’ experiences by developing them as skilled performers and confident leaders and enabling a lifelong engagement in a healthy active lifestyle. 

We believe that PE develops young people in a holistic way through the development of many core principles including confidence, fundamental movement skills, social development, mental health and leadership. Students are provided with the opportunity to fulfil their roles and responsibilities to develop their leadership skills that allow them to communicate what they think, feel, observe and understand. 

Our PE curriculum aims to make students passionate about how and why living a healthy active lifestyle should be a core focus within life. We aim to develop competent individuals who can perform and reflect with confidence. We encourage an all-inclusive environment for all and consider gender, equality and diversity in all sports.  

PE allows individuals to show sportsmanship and respect to all through fair play and sporting etiquette. We want students to be skilled, competent performers who are able to develop transferable skills across a range of practical experiences.   

Key Stage 3 students experience four individual sports and four team sports on a five-week rotation. Students develop their knowledge of a range of invasion, striking and field and net games, alongside athletics and fitness. This provides our pupils with a broad and balanced grounding in Physical Education.   

Year 7

In Year 7, students focus on the fundamental skills linked to four individual sports (table tennis, badminton, fitness and athletics) and four team sports (football, basketball, cricket, rugby and handball). They build a solid foundation to support them in a competitive situation. Our curriculum offers rugby in Year 7 – a key focus is tag and rugby league rules. 

Year 8

In Year 8, students continue with the eight sports learnt in Year 7 and build on the fundamental skills they learnt in Year 7. Students expand their understanding of each sport.  

Year 9

In Year 9, students show their development over the previous two years by building on concepts they learnt in each sport, where they show their tactical awareness and officiating skills in a competitive situation. Handball, one of the fastest growing sports in Europe, is introduced Year 9. Some students specialise in this sport in Key Stage 4.

Key Stage 4

All students participate in core PE at Key Stage 4. Every student follows one of the following strands: competition, leadership and fitness. Examples of sports offered are rounders, netball and volleyball. While on the leadership strand, students have the opportunity to earn the Sports Leaders UK award – students demonstrate their leadership qualities by running a sporting event or lesson to a group over a period of time.   

In addition, students can choose to take GCSE PE or BTEC Sport. With more curriculum time, students develop a deeper practical and theoretical understanding of the subject. They develop their analysis and performance understanding in greater depth. 

Key Stage 5

In Year 12 and Year 13 our BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in Sport allows students to retain the knowledge they had from Key Stage 4 (on either GCSE or BTEC), diving deeper into the topic.  

In Year 12 and Year 13, students dive deeper into the knowledge they developed in Key Stage 4 with a full introduction to the world of PE, sport and sports science. This provides them with a strong base from which to move on to higher education, employment or further training. ​Students will how Physical Education affects and contributes to society and how they can apply the knowledge from this course to any number of different practical situations or career choices.
