Travel and Tourism

We teach travel and tourism at Paddington to build our students’ knowledge of an industry which employs 1 in 10 people worldwide.  Students have the opportunity to learn about one of the fastest growing industries in the UK, giving students clear progression pathways into further education and employment. Our aim is to develop a range of personal skills and attributes needed for them to be successful on these pathways, and to give them a sense of pride and ownership.

The combination of units studied strikes the right balance between challenge and engagement but also delivers practical knowledge and skills over time.  Students look at the UK travel and tourism industry and further extend their knowledge on the UK as a destination.  They explore some of the key areas within the sector, including accommodation, tourism development and promotion, transport, and visitor attractions. Our travel and tourism curriculum gives students the opportunity to develop key skills, such as research, report drafting and writing and presentation skills.

Year 10

Students start by learning about what the travel and tourism industry is and its components. They explore some of the key areas within the sector, including accommodation, tourism development and promotion, transport, and visitor attractions. Students get the opportunity to develop research skills and learn about a range of British and international visitor attractions and legislation supporting the travel and tourism industry worldwide. Students then start to look at factors affecting tourism, from economic booms to volcanic eruptions, disease, and war.

Year 11

Students consider the impact of tourism on different tourist locations, be it environmentally, socially, or economically. In their final assignment of the course, students bring together all of their learning from across the course and apply it to an understanding of different needs and wants of tourists. They use the knowledge that they have built to research and prepare a holiday itinerary for a group with specific holiday requirements.
